Community Outreach Programs

Engage in life-long learning and critical thinking. that promotes national excellence in

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math

National test results from the last 20 years confirm that U.S. secondary schools lag far behind contemporaries in most industrialized nations in their knowledge ofmathematics and sciences. In the
midst of one of the most challenging periods in history, the nation’s youth must be prepared to lead in the technological future. The reality is that many are not prepared. Many students even question the relevance of math and science in their daily lives.

Community Outreach Programs of the Aviation Museum at Marietta, Georgia (AMMG) provide stimulating experiences for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, learning outside of formal classroom environments through media, exhibits, and community-based programming. Program goals
are to increase interest in, understanding of, and engagement in, STEM disciplines by individuals of all ages; to establish linkages between informal and formal education; and to stimulate parents and others to support their children’s STEM learning endeavors and to become informed proponents of high-quality, universal STEM education.

Community Outreach Program objectives aim to:
•Engage the public in shaping and sharing the experience of exploration and discovery.
•Improve public understanding and appreciation of science and technology, including aviation
technology, research, and flying missions.

By 2009, Community Outreach Programs will achieve the following results:
•Establish programs to engage the informal education community with aviation science and technology.
•Provide instructional materials (and information) derived from scientific activities that meet the needs of
outreach education partners.
•Provide professional development for outreach education partners.

Aviation Ground School

The Aviation Museum at Marietta, Georgia (AMMG) in partnership with the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps offers the Aviation Ground School to provide a unique opportunity for students from across the country to prepare for the FAA Private Pilot written exam.

Since 1971, more than 11,000 students have successfully completed the program. Organizations such as Civil Air Patrol, Naval Sea Cadets, the Young Marines and Air Force, Army, and Navy JROTC participate each summer. During the two-week program, students reside in dormitory housing and attend courses in university classrooms. The program primarily serves youth ages 15 and up. During the summer of 2008, two consecutive Ground Schools will be offered.

Courses are taught by volunteer instructors with aviationrelated training and experience. Instructors teach no more than three hours per day. The Private Pilot Course includes 88 hours of classroom instruction on aerodynamics, aircraft systems, flight instruments, Federal Aviation Regulations, airport operations, meteorology, aircraft performance, navigation, and radio communication. Upon completion of the course, students will be qualified to take the FAA Private Pilot written exam, part of the requirement for earning a private pilot’s license.

Virtual Experience

Our Virtual Museum and Online Programming will be designed to create an engaged community of students and adults who develop an invested interest in the Aviation Museum and its learning goals. The strategy of this program is to reach out to schools and other established programs such as after-school aviation, science, and gaming clubs in order to further interest in STEM. Our online programs will utilize age-appropriate and non-violent aviation edutainment to English and Spanish-speaking
children.
